You may have already noticed a lot of blue and red squares on social media. They are standing for Uyghurs and for Armenians, each of which are on different parts of the planet and are facing hard time to survive. Uyghurs are persecuted in Chine, because they are Muslims, while Armenians are Christians and are persecuted by majority Muslim Azerbaijan. Explanations below.
There are millions of Uyghurs, who are being tortured in concentration camps in China not because what they are doing, but because what there are: Muslims. A lot of people in the world are expressing their compassion for them and one of the most popular forms of support is taking the form of a post containing the hashtag #freeuyghurs. This hashtag is also accompanied by a blue square photo, that gives more visibility on social media. The hashtag #freeuyghurs has been posted on Instagram for around 110.000 times. This hashtag is also viral on Twitter, Facebook and elsewhere too.

Two more recent hashtags, #recognizeartsakh and #peaceforarmenians are going viral right now, because there is a conflict on Europe’s eastern edge: Christian Armenians of the Republic of Artsakh (also called The republic of Nagorno-Karabakh) are getting shelled by majority Muslim Azerbaijan. There are two Armenian republics: the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Artsakh. The first Armenian republic is internationally recognized, while The Republic of Artsakh or the republic of Nagorno-Karabakh is not internationally recognized yet, but is a, de facto, full state, that is home to ethnic Christian Armenians. The majority Christian Armenian Republic of Artsakh and majority Muslim Azerbaijan were engaged in a war in early 90s. The conflict was frozen by a ceasefire agreement and since these two states are engaged in a permanent frozen conflict that heightens regions tensions. Recently the 10 million Muslim Azerbaijan attacked the hardly 150.000 Christian republic, that needs so much to get international recognition of his right to self-determination. Those 150.000 Christian Armenians of the Republic of Artsakh are courageously trying to resist against the 10.000.000 Muslim Azerbaijan. The #peaceforarmenians was mentioned in around 80.000 posts on Instagram and is getting more and more shares on social media.
